'My Burglar Alarm Sensor Is Beeping' - Why It Probably Isn't Your Burglar Alarm...
"My burglar alarm sensor is beeping." It's something we hear quite regularly over the phone and by email, but the answer often surprises people. In almost every case, your burglar alarm sensor isn't actually beeping.
Can a Burglar Alarm Sensor Beep? The simple answer is no. Burglar alarm sensors, such as PIR motion detectors, door contacts and window sensors, do not contain a speaker or sounder. This means they cannot produce a beeping noise.
If you're hearing a beep every few seconds or every minute or so, it's almost certainly coming from another device within your home. More often than not, the sound is coming from one of the following:
- Carbon monoxide alarm
- Heat alarm
- Smoke alarm
These devices commonly emit an intermittent beep when the battery is running low, the unit has reached the end of its service life or it has detected something causing it to make a sound. Because the sound can echo around a room, it's easy to assume it's coming from your burglar alarm system when it isn't. While the sensors themselves cannot beep, other parts of your alarm system can. Depending on the make and model of your system, the control panel or keypad may emit warning tones to indicate a fault, low battery or another system condition.
Carbon Monoxide Alarm?
If you believe the sound may be coming from a carbon monoxide alarm, you can contact the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. The service is free and available 24 hours a day.
